Additional Details
-
In addition to social, communication, and relationship skills, the teen groups address life and executive functioning skills, including organization, collaboration, decision-making, scheduling, problem-solving, compromise, flexibility, and time and money management by incorporating 3-5 trips per semester. Therapists and students work together to discover common interests and brainstorm and plan trips. You can learn more about teen trips here.
-
For students aged 3-12 years old, there are a maximum of 7-9 students per group with 2-3 staff. For students aged 13-18 years old (teens), there are a maximum of 8-9 students per group with 2-3 staff.
In both cases, we aim to have at least one staff per 2-3 students.
-
Over the course of the semester (approximately every 8 weeks), phone calls led by your child’s group leader are held to discuss your child’s individual progress and performance at Social City. This is also an opportunity for you to share any feedback, updates, and/or ask any questions you may have.
Our dedicated therapists are happy to be in touch with families (or anyone on your child's team) throughout the semester. The more information we have and the more we work together as a team, the quicker our students tend to generalize the skills being taught.
-
Sessions include a group conversation, interactive lesson, collaborative games, crafts and/or projects, and movement activities. Students have the opportunity to practice social skills while interacting in a natural way with their peers, immersed in fun, engaging activities. Target skills are introduced interactively through group discussions, visuals, short video clips, individualized role play opportunities and group games.
-
The language group follows the same structure as our other social skills groups, but provides more expressive and receptive language support to students who may need/benefit from it, while also targeting their social-emotional development. The children in these groups are working on building their social skills, but also working towards strengthening their language skills.
-
A 2-part consultation is scheduled which consists of a 20-30 minute phone call with a parent and a 5-10 minute virtual consultation with their child.
The purpose of the consultation is to learn about their child, explain the program in greater detail, and answer any questions that arise, to determine if Social City is an appropriate fit, and if so, which group is most appropriate. In order to maximize learning potential, students are appropriately matched according to their age, emotional maturity, social functioning, goals and interests.
-
Social City provides a range of resources to support parents in fostering their child’s social-emotional growth. We offer free monthly informational workshops covering a variety of relevant topics, and all parents are welcome to participate.
In addition, we host monthly Q&A Zoom sessions where parents can submit questions that are answered by our experienced Speech-Language Therapists.
To reinforce learning, group leaders send out weekly tips and strategies to parents, helping them carry over social skills development at home, school, and beyond. These resources ensure that the support continues in various environments, promoting consistent progress in social-emotional development.
